Edward Atkinson:

Hi!

My name is Edward Atkinson and I’m 24 years old. I spent the past year in Pula, Croatia as an English Teaching Assistant with the Fulbright Program. I taught students at the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, as well as eleven- to thirteen-year-olds at a local elementary school.

I graduated from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, where I studied Economics, Mathematics, and Music Performance. While I was there, I taught Spanish to fourth graders and English to adult immigrants.

Music has been a big part of my life—I started playing the drums seriously when I was twelve years old. It’s hard for me to find any kind of music that I don’t like. I love learning about the musical traditions of each new place that I go.

I speak Spanish and Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian, but not Hungarian, so hopefully the campers will make a special effort to practice their English with me!

This will be my first time participating in the Roma and Friends Summer Camp, and I couldn’t be more excited!

See you there,

Edward

János Balogh:

My name is János Balogh and I am 20 years old. I come from Siklós, a small town near Pecs.

I study IT programming at the University of Pecs. I would like to be IT software engineer after graduation.

In my free time I usually go out with my friends. We play football once in a month. I am interested in PCs and new technology and so on. I also like drawing, but usually I edit pictures on PC with PhotoShop.

I have been member of Romaversitas for 1 year. The Romaversitas is the training and scholarship program of Roma youngsters in higher education. The Romaversitas Foundation has been acting as a founder of university and college students for fourteen years. We not only give scholarships and various services, but also try to create space for vibrant social life.

Also I have been member of Ternype for 2 years. Ternype is a network of Roma and non-Roma youth and youth associations, which creates space for young people to become active citizens through empowerment, mobilization, self-organization and participation. We believe in the common efforts by creating trust, and mutual respect between Roma and non-Roma youth.

I am looking forward to it.

See you in camp!

Jani :)

Róbert Balogh:

Hi Everyone,

I am Róbert Balogh. I am blind since birth and I am a gypsy man. I have got a guide dog called Marzipan who is 5 years old. I speak gypsy (Lovari) language, as I grew up in an authentic gypsy family in Demecser. I was 8 years old when I started the Budapest School for the Blind.

I like sports, such as fighting, blind football, running, judo, karate and goalball. I like eating delicious food and I sometimes cook, too. I am an active, optimistic and very calm person and I like helping people, too.

I took part four times in Roma and Friends follow-up weekends and during these weekends I made interactive workshops about guide dogs and the daily life of blind people in general. The children loved these programs, because the dog helped a lot to get near to the blind. They found interesting the white cane, Braille writing, Braille cards, money counting with folded eyes, guiding blind people, and getting answers for their questions.

I would like to make programs about guide dogs, blind people, gypsy language and show them goalball too, as a counselor.

Best,

Robi

Suzana Mesić:

Hi everyone!

My name is Suzana and I'm 28 years young J. I was born and raised in Varaždin, in the northern part of Croatia. I graduated from Teacher Training College and work as an English teacher at two rural primary schools which I simply enjoy. But there comes time when you want to experience something totally new, different and exciting – I'm positive that I'll experience all of that at the Camp.

In my free time I try to keep myself physically active so I do lots of sport activities (when I do find extra time, especially during sunny weekends). I like cycling, roller skating, hiking and sometimes even enjoy running if I find a jogging buddy to chat with along the way. I absolutely love dancing and would like to learn all types of dances. Dance has become my everyday favourite activity since I've started taking Zumbafitness classes.

I cannot say I enjoy travelling (although I would like to visit every possible place) because I haven't travelled a lot, but I'll consider my staying at the Camp one of my travelling points.

This will be my first experience of that kind and hopefully we'll have a blast!

C U there  :-)

S.

Marcell Szekeres:

Hi!

My name is Marcell Szekeres. I'm 19 years old and I'm a high school student in Pécel at Ráday Pál high school.I'm interested in acting, dancing, and singing.

I'd describe myself as a very playful, caring, and honest person. My dream that I want to achieve first of all is to perform and entertain people because it makes me happy and I feel myself the best when I'm performing.Although I'm a bit too shy and that is one of the things that makes it hard for me to achieve my dreams.

As a second chance if I won't be able to perform because of my lack of skills and thanks to my shyness I'd like to learn more languages because at this time I only speak English and a bit of German, and I'd like to teach at an elementary or at a high school as a language teacher because I like to care and help other people.
This is my 3rd time at the Roma and friends camp,First I came there as a student and 2 years later I joined as a counselor.

I'm very interested in Asian cultures and languages mostly in Korean,Chinese, and Japanese cultures and languages. My interests in these cultures started when I was 14 and later on If I'll have the chance I'd like to live in one of those countries.

Jessica Wozniak:

Hello!

My name is Jessica Wozniak and I am 24 years old. I’m from Chicago, IL, USA, but I’ve been living abroad for the past two years. I studied English Publishing at Illinois State University and after graduation I received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Montenegro. I loved my time there so much that I decided to look for another teaching position in Eastern Europe. Currently I’m working at a public middle school/high school in Bucharest, Romania. This year I taught grades 5, 8, 9, 10, 11--so quite a wide range! My favorite class (and probably the most difficult) was 10th grade human rights. One of our units was about Roma rights, and I found myself learning a lot of information that I didn’t know before.

In my free time I love traveling, cooking, reading, horseback riding, cycling and relaxing with friends. I also spend a good deal of time entertaining the humorous back cat that shares my apartment.

I enjoy working with youth and I’ve spent many fun summers working at summer camps. I’m really looking forward to experiencing the Roma and Friends camp!
